From the front this building — the Beach hotel — is designed to look like a wave to compliment the sail design of the nearby Burj Al Arab, so from the right vantage point you get a pretty cool effect of a sailboat and a wave beneath it. This isn’t the first time that the statue of David has been censored — in 1857, the Grand Duke of Tuscany surprised Queen Victoria with a replica of Michelangelo’s David. Queen Vic was so embarrassed by David’s nudity that she requested a fig leaf was created to preserve his modesty whilst it went on display in London. I did make a leaf cutout which would have suited this caption better, but David in underwear made me laugh more. Pisa had been occupied by the Nazis in WWII, but in 1944 the US army was advancing. The tower, or as the US soliders referred to it the “Tiltin’ Hilton”, was suspected of being used by the Nazis as a lookout tower, so Staff Sgt. Leon Weckstein was tasked with scouting the Tower to confirm their suspicions. From a nearby olive grove, he peered through his binoculars looking for signs of life; his order was that if saw movement he would call ‘fire’ down the radio and the tower would be demolished in seconds. But just as he studied the landmark, bombs exploded nearby and Weckstein was ordered to retreat. Had he seen anyone in the tower, the famous landmark may not still be standing today. In an interview with the Guardian in 2000 he was asked if he thought the Germans were in the tower: “You know something? The countdown to the New Year is on! As 2017 arrives I imagine a lot of people will be keen to forget the year we’ve just had, but good things did happen in 2016 — the number of Tigers in the world rose, as did the number of Giant Pandas, Humpback Whales & Green Sea Turtles. A peace deal was signed in Colombia after 50 years of civil war. Sri Lanka is now malaria free after a wildly ambitious plan to eradicate it in five years paid off. The Solar Impulse 2 travelled 35,000km around the world powered by nothing but the sun. Candace Payne made millions of people laugh with a Chewbacca mask. Volunteers in India planted 50 million trees in 24 hours (read that again. How amazing is that?). Portugal ran its entire nation solely on renewable energy for four days straight. A new Harry Potter book came out. An on duty policeman proposed to his boyfriend in front of thousands of people at London pride. Sea World is no longer breeding captive Killer Whales. 93% of the world’s children are learning to read and write — the highest percentage in history. Good stuff is happening all around us- look for it and be a part of it. Oh, and one other good thing that happened this year- Leo finally got that oscar! A very Happy New Year wherever you are and a ‘yuge’ thank you for following my adventures in 2016. Here’s something I learnt this week — if you go out into the streets of London with a Death Star paper cut-out, strangers stop and take a lot of interest in what you’re doing. A few even came up and excitedly chatted Star Wars to me whilst I was getting the shots for this composition, but the truth is I’m one of the six people on the planet who has never seen the original Star Wars. So a couple of weeks ago when @odeoncinemas asked me if I wanted to see Rogue One at the BFI IMAX in London, I said “sure, but I have no idea what the back story is”. Turns out when you’re watching it on a huge screen (the largest in the UK no less) and surrounded by excited fans — you can’t help but be swept up in the whole Star Wars world #RogueOneOfficial #RogueOne #Ad #Odeon #London #Cityscape #Skyline #Sunset #StarWars #DeathStar
